AVG 7.5 Free, ZoneAlarm, and Spybot S&D. Just remember to go in and activate the resident shield on Spybot; it is off by default and must be activated manually.

Aside from a good spell checker here is my standard system hardening suite ... (always remember, a cheap shot is a terrible thing to waste!)

My security page for online scanners (never trust ONE anti-threat tool) ...

You may also use this new Rootkit Analyzer by the good folks that brought you SpyBot …

The best all-'tound housekeeping tool (please un-check the Yahoo toolbar option during installation) ...

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Install SpywareBlaster to protect your browser and HOSTS file from exploitation. Check for updates, then "protect all" (update monthly) ...

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

REMEMBER, THERE IS NO SINGLE "BEST" ANTI-THREAT APPLICATION THAT IS 100% INFALLIBLE!

Please keep in mind that VirusTotal statistics (http://www.virustotal.com/estadisticas.html) indicate that NEARLY ALL of tens of thousands of suspect files submitted each week go undetected by at least one of the thirty most popular anti-threat applications! A few may come close, but there are no "silver bullets" anywhere on the horizon.

Please install at least one of the following anti-threat applications. Each has their own strong and weak points, but they are all among the best. Check for updates immediately after installation and update frequently thereafter (daily is preferred)

Avast! - http://www.avast.com/
AVG - http://free.avg.com/ (recommended)
Avira - http://www.avira.com/
BitDefender – http://www.bitdefender.com/
CA Antivirus - http://www.ca.com/
F-Secure - http://www.f-secure.com/
Kaspersky - http://usa.kaspersky.com/
NOD32 - http://www.eset.com/
Norman – http://www.norman.com/ (definitely NOT Norton!)
Panda Antivirus - http://www.pandasoftware.com
Prevx – http://www.prevx.com/
Sophos - http://www.sophos.com/
TrendMicro - http://www.trendmicro.com/
Windows Live OneCare - http://onecare.live.com/

Also, to protect your browser form future hijackings please install ...

XPL/AVG LinkScanner ... http://www.explabs.com/downloads/
or
McAfee SiteAdvisor ... http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ie.html

If you have an IT background you will find HiJackThis! from my Security page an invaluable tool to track down and remove stubborn malware. Use the convenient online analyzer or upload your HJT! log to any appropriate HJT! forum for assistance. CAUTION: If you do not know your way around the Windows operating system, please do not attempt to use HJT!, as you may render your system unusable!

Now let’s alter your unsafe Internet practices. Change your mail reader (e.g., Outlook) to accept only plain ASCII text emails and never open attachments from unknown sources. Avoid all file/music/video sharing sites. Maintain a very small IM community (if you must), and become realistically “paranoid”. “They” are indeed out to get you!

Make certain that your Windows firewall (or other software firewall) is active and FULLY STEALTHED. Remember that a "closed" port is every bit as visible to the outside world as an "open" port. I prefer using both hardware and software firewalls.

Here are a few good software firewalls …

Ashampoo Firewall http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/product_2_0050__.htm
Comodo Firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/index.html
Jetico Firewall http://www.jetico.com/jpf2.htm
Kerio Winroute Firewall http://www.kerio.com/kwf_home.html
OnlineArmor Firewall http://www.online-armor.com/downloads.html
Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/
PortsLock Firewall http://www.devicelock.com/pl/download.html
Sunbelt Kerio Firewall http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/
ZoneAlarm Firewall http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp

Avoid the use of ALL "no name" anti-threat and registry cleaning applications. THEY CAN AND WILL COMPROMISE YOUR SYSTEM!

All those who are careless and harbor any manner of threat (due their lack of diligence or general apathy) should include themselves as part of the problem. They are a public menace. Please avoid all contact with these morons, otherwise they will re-infect your system!

The best of luck in fighting the good fight!

My Internet Security page ...

http://SecorConsulting.net/pages/security.html

My ID Theft page ...

http://SecorConsulting.net/pages/identity.html

My XP security “hardening” page (there is no Vista direct equivalency at this time)...

PROGRAMS FOR VISTA

LOTS OF FREE PROGRAM CAN BE FOUND AT www.pcworld.com
LOOK FOR THE DOWNLOAD AT TOP OF PAGE, THEN CLICK
THEN GO TO THE BLUE SEARCH BOX AND TYPE IN VISTA DOWNLOADS AND A LIST OF 39 OR MORE WILL COME UP. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW THAT ARE FREE AND SOME THAT WOULD COME IN HANDY UNDER SHAREWARE IF NEEDED TO FIX A COMPUTER AND YOU HAD NO OTHER CHOICES.

ZONEALARM- FIREWALL
AVG 8.0 VIRUS
AVG-ANTI VIRUS (WHICH IS THE SPYWARE,MAL-WARE,ROOTKITS
PROGRAM) http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antispyware/
SPYBOT 6.1
GOOGLE EARTH
GOOGLE DESKTOP
BELARC
IE PRIVACY KEEPER
Ccleaner
GLARY UTILITLIES (you may have to look under registry repair programs)
ANOTHER PROGRAM TO PUT ON IS JAVA 6.1 AND TO GET THIS YOU MUST GO TO JAVA sun AND DOWNLOAD.
Again be sure use newest version for vista.

WHERE TO DOWLOAD AVG AND SPYBOT, IE PRIVACY KEEPER:
ALL CAN BE FOUND AT http://www.snapfiles.com go to the freeware section, look for Internet Cleanup, then look for the software called IE Privacy Keeper, AVG & spybot are under anti-virus and spyware tools etc

Spybot search & destroy found at www.safer-networking.org

for free registry repair programs or to http://www.snapfiles.com and to their freeware section to find them also.

A good freebie is go to yahoo or Google and type in Belarc and download and run that program, print out results, run and do so ever so often. Will tell you what on PC from hardware, Software, key codes etc

Note these programs for the most part WILL NOT work on Vista 64 bit

You need to get Super Antispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Adaware

Super Antispyware is a bitch to remove when you get tired of it. Adaware won't find anything that Spybot won't catch.

Patrick Kolla's "Spybot Search & Destroy" is well-known, safe, trusted, and effective. Highly recommended. Caution: A dozen other utilities masquerade under very similar names. As others have posted, you want "Spybot Search & Destroy" by Patrick Kolla. Here's his homepage, where you can read about it:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

You can also download it from MajorGeeks:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

SpywareBlaster is good, too. You can read a 4-y/o review at MajorGeeks, where you can also download the current version (4.1).
http://majorgeeks.com/review.php?id=19

It's very easy to set up. It doesn't eat up your resources (no running processes). You don't even execute it, just install it, and it blocks a big list of known malware. Update it manually now and then (free). If you update automatically you have to pay for it. (Otoh, it's not the end of the world to pay for good software.)

I haven't used Grisoft's AVG or Zone Alarm in several years so I can't say how good they are now. I use a corporate AV that I like much better than the standard home & small office varieties.

My router (like most routers) has a built-in firewall with with SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection). It's not top of the line by current standards, but a hard firewall is much stronger than a software firewall like ZA. I quit using ZA when they were bought up by a certain Israeli company a few years ago and acquired a reputation for phoning-home (spying).
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/12/02/180solutions_sues_zone_labs/

I don't know what to believe about ZA today, but I haven't felt safe using it in the last 5 years or so.

It's bad enough that our own (U.S.) gov't taps our phone and email, but foreign gummints too? Have we sacrificed all of our privacy rights since 9-11? Or is it just during the current administration?

I would recommend that you learn to spell the word “you”.
