• Interestingly, there is not one single state in the United States that would agree with what you just wrote here.
  
  In every single state in the country, what you're suggesting is called "self-help." Meaning an attempt to recover stolen property without an adjudication that it actually is stolen property that belongs to you.
  
  But if you're anxious to go to jail and hang out with OJ Simpson, by all means go right ahead.

• I was not talking legalities. and I pointed out they should make sure the objects were thiers .I got the impression it was a friend that had taken the objects. .. It would not be legal advice i would give to anyone.

  I am a lawyer and, while I don't know where the questioner lives, I literally don't know any jurisdiction where this would be considered anything other than theft/burglary.
  
  I probably over-reacted on the DR thing. It's just that this one is literally a "go to jail if you get this wrong issue."

• OK. I do get that -- but wouldn't you feel an obligation to warn them about the potential dangers of taking the self-help option in repossessing stolen property?

• No problem I am just grateful that once in a while and it is very very rare that there is a person that has the decency to tell why they down rated. I never downrate it is futile because nobody leaves a comment so nobody learns why they have been downrated. You do not lose the points so it is a waste of everyones time people just think it is done out of spite.When a person has the decency to leave a comment at least we may learn or at least learn why.:)

• That's very perceptive. I hadn't drawn that connection. It would explain why some people feel it necessary to take direct action rather than rely on others.
  
  Maybe the world would be a better place is we could convince them, rather than recovering stolen property themselves, to simply say, "I have people for that." LOL.

• Terrific idea, as long as you're willing to go to jail as a thief. The law has systems in place to recover stolen property. If you try to steal it back yourself, you are likely to be prosecuted.
  
  This is what sent OJ Simpson to jail finally.

  But asking this question on a public website pretty much negates "stealth" as an operational option.
  
  Do you think that the cops would fail to dump the computer right off the bat if this questioner steals back what was stolen from him?

  Recovering stolen property in the absence of a court order has a very technical description in the law -- theft.
  
  The questioner should get a warrant and let the sherriff reposess the property. Or do it himself and go to jail (and I'm NOT kidding about that).
