    Even earlier than that, Ed Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith headed the Computer Graphics Laboratory in 1975 in the former garage at the New York Institute of Technology, which is the origin of Pixar. They had a wealthy patron, Alexander Schure, who founded the institute and funded the department with the latest equipment needed to research and experiment in computer animation.
