No the points you gained stay with you. The original poster only gets the answers not the points.

The questions stay active unless they have been deemed unsuitable for the site by the staff.

Questions are always active on Answerbag. You will not lose the points that you gained from the question. Usually when it happens the person that collects the duplicate answers loses out they give points and comments and gain no points themselves .I have spent four hours answering duplicate questions that have been moved over and gained nothing for them.

I don't think there is a time limit or shelf life for questions... If your question was a duplicate it will happen. What annoys me is when the questions are not the same, but similar, and one gets chopped.

The CLs and AB staff should be bright enough to realize that some questions are time based, as in "What's the best treatment available today for Alzheimer's Disease?"

The right answer to that question in 1999 isn't going to be the best answer in 2009. If AB is to remain current, some questions having time-based answers need to be reasked from time to time. However they do not appear to have thought that through yet.

AB Questions remain active forever, unless they are considered spam, offensive, nonsense, or duplicates. Spam, offensive and nonsense question remain in the DB, at least for some time, but are no longer available to be flagged and don't appear in searches (unless a glitch allows it). These seem to be periodically purged.

Duplicates, as you have found, get merged to the oldest copy of the question (found by general AB population, and accepted by AB staff moderators), no more points accrue for the newer copy, and the old question becomes "active" again.

No... Questions should NOT "time out" as AB is in the business of creating a database of questions and answers, to be easily found by people via internet search engines. If you ask a duplicate, be happy for the points you got before they were merged, and happy for the reviving of an older question, if THEY start getting points.

If they are time-sensitive questions (with dates in them, asking about YOURSELF, the CURRENT President (obviously, and NOT the presidency), etc., if they are flagged by users as dupes, they are usually rejected.

If you have a question flagged and accepted, and disagree, go to the question in question (as it were), scroll to the bottom of the page, click feedback, and state your case.

REMEMBER: AB is NOT a game. It's a Q&A site with social (comment threads) and gaming aspects (points, levels, leaderboards), but it started as, and by many, is still considered a serious site. (Many don't like frivolous questions... Not me... I enjoy them, but there are those who don't.)

If you don't like the way AB works, fomenting rebellion will usually get you PBed. You can ask a number of former ABers who are no longer allowed to be on the site. If you don't like the way it works, just sign out, and don't return. That's what people do when they don't like certain websites.

Actually, I'm sure most of us would prefer you stay, learn the rules and the way things work, and play nice. It's not that hard. ;-)
