What is the purpose of scientific research in criminology?

    The point is as said above forensically new methods of collecting physical evidence. But also some research is done to find ways of effective crime prevention, and to test out theories. Another thing is to learn about criminals. Why do they commit crimes, and such. How do you deter a criminal. So I mean there are many reason's to research stuff. But the purpose is to gain understanding, find ways of prevention, and to gain new knowledge.
