• But we didn't do this for smoking, drinking, and prescriptions, so why do we need to do it for marijuana? Cigarette taxes came when the health consequences were fully understood -- it can be the same way for pot.

• Yes, and look how many BILLIONS of dollars we wasted on those things!
  And no one knew the consequences until habits were already formed. Isn't the very definition of an inteliigent society it's ability to learn from it's mistakes and not repeat them?

• True enough -- though we know a lot about pot -- people have been using it regularly for several generations... there are people in their 80's that smoke it regularly. So it doesn't kill you in the same miserable way that cigarettes and alcohol can. If you smoke or drink regularly, your chance of making it to 80 is pretty slim.

• Another interesting point. If it leaves tar and other deposits on a bong bowl, what is it leaving in a person's lungs? There is no such thing as a free ride.

• there's lots of ways to get tar in your lungs, including cooking in the kitchen with hot oils, and walking on a city sidewalk -- figure it this way, a bong is the safest way to smoke, because so much tar condenses on the bowl. But I don't think anybody is asking for a "free ride" -- you can take almost anything, and point to some "badness" -- take soft drinks -- they make your bones weak... but that doesn't mean you avoid it, it means you use it carefully, with balance.

• I don't see us metering out cooking oils and cigarettes. I'm not tying to be difficult, just pointing out the negatives in hopes of narrowing down to the possibilities.
