I am a engine mechanic (for 40+ yrs.). What I would do BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE is: 1.drain all oil from engine & remove filter; 2.replenish oil & install new filter; Ck. ALL fluid levels & conditions (coolant, brake, p.steer., trans.), & 'tend to' as necessary; 3. ck. condition of all drivebelts; 4. disable engine from 'firing' (thru ign. or fuel system); 5. 'if feasible', remove fuel from tank (it's 'stale'); 6. add several gallons of new fuel; 7. with engine disabled, 'crank' the engine over in 10 second intervals (then let starter 'cool' for a few minutes) several times (to distribute the oil thru-out the engine); 8. 'able-ize' engine, & let IDLE 'til Normal oper. temp. 9. replace oil & filter; 10.if all is well, CAREFULLY 'road-test' (it'll creak & moan & groan). Good Luck!

  • All of the oil will have settled into the crankcase. Bump the starter a few times to make the engine toss some of the oil up inside. That should help it start more smoothly and prevent undue metal abrasion.
