It really depends on what you want to focus on. For most people getting into the industry, they would focus on a specific skillset -- eg. 3D modelling or programming.
But if your ultimate desire is to own a company, and assuming you wish to actually participate in making the game, then I would recommend getting some experience coding, modelling and texturing.
To get started with this, you will need the following tools:
- A programming environment / compiler. Best choice: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (free). Most game programmers code in C++, although C# is also becoming a viable option.
- Need to choose a graphics API or engine. Direct3D is good, but I would recommend start off with an engine -- you will get better results faster, and it will help you learn the basics. My advice: Ogre (open-source graphics engine).
- A 3D modelling tool. I'd say go with Milkshape3D (fairly cheap, probably like $30 or so, can't remember).
- A texturing tool (Photoshop is best, but expensive).
Yup, this is also my dream. I'm currently on a game development course and I'm on my placement year for which I am actually learning how to set up a buisness. It's a lot of hard work and not something you can just jump in to, so I suggest if you don't yet have experience you get some books and take a course during which you will learn what software you like using.
There are a lot of different areas and software required. I have experience in 3D modelling and programming. For programming you want a compiler to run all your code, and the one you get depends on the language your using. C++ is industry standard and for that I'm using visual studio, but I originally started off using codeblocks or bloodshed dev c++ (free downloads). For 3D modelling I have experience with both 3DS Max and Maya. Personally i think Maya is better. Unfortunatley these programs are not very cheap, so you may want to find a cheaper alternative or look for a student version.
I'm sure if your dedicated and passionate enough about the industry you have a good chance at suceeding, Good luck! :)
One way to get some practice would be to get Oblivion by Bethesda and use their Construction Set to get a feel for creating content with a well developed engine.
some games usually have probs on vista
Download America's Army 2 (not 3) and use the Unreal Editor. It may seem overwhelming at first, but the Unreal Engine is quickly becoming a very popular engine. Here is a basic tutorial:

Another decent engine is FPS Creator. It is rather cheap and quite simple but is still very good for practice.
A good start would be to attend college and major in video game programming. It is a valid major these days at some schools! Then on top of that, get an MBA to help you run the business.
uhmm Won't you learn what these are if you go to school to learn how to program? (since you would be finished school)
