  • because we want to. we try to.
  • I never thought they did. But they sound more American than Australian, British, or East Asian because: (1) the Philippines were a territory of the US from 1898-1946, and a colony of Spain for 300 years before that; (2) there are still strong economic, political, and social ties between the Philippines and the US; (3) American culture and mass media are everywhere; (4) they're more akin to the other Austronesians/Micronesians - both genetically and lynguistically - than they are to East Asians, and so don't have a problem with English phonemes and consonants like East Asians do. But they actually speak with an accent that's distinctly Philippino - I've noted at least 3 different ones. The most American sounding one is where they chew their words and speak with a of twang like they're from the Midwest ... only different.
  • Not all of them do. The ones that were raised in America will probably have no filipino accent.
  • in general,i don't think Filipinos have American accent.. it's a matter of constant practice to have a good accent.. many Pinoys are trained in a callcenter company that's why they have a very good accent.. and not just that, some Filipinos are just really so good on it.. fond of watching english movies etc.
  • I don't think they sound Americans. Actually, Filipinos have their own distinctive accents. Sometimes the accent is so thick I have a hard time understanding them,.
  • Pinoys just worship american and try all they can to become the 51st state. Everything they can do to look or sound like a "cool american", they will do. I ve never seen such a low national pride. And the creation of taglish is another example.
  • I never heard one with an American accent (granted I've not met many Filipinos) but if you have met some individuals who do, my guess is it's probably from contact with Americans from the US Military Base there. If that's where they learned English then that's how they'll speak it. I've come across this phenomenon in other parts of the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Naval_Base_Subic_Bay
  • They don't unless they were born here. They have Spanish accents. The country speaks mostly spanish.
