What's a reasonable amount of time to give yourself to master a new language - one that you haven't studied at all before?

    It depends a lot on how close the language is to your native language, or other languages you have learned. For example, someone who speaks Italian would find Spanish much easier than Cantonese.

    Given the above criteria, and use of efficient method (one hour per day at least), I'd say between six months (for a very similar language with lots of cognates) and five years (an utterly alien language with different script).
