Sit down and talk to them seriously..Don't get angry, just explain that you know that they are lying and that you are disappointed in that behaviour.

Depends on what the lie was and how I knew it was a lie. Most of the time when my son lied I let the lie play out to the end which generally meant somewhere along the line he admitted to it. Then I would sit down with him and explain how much easier it would have been for him simply to have told me the truth in the first place. Most of the time my son beat himself up over it and punished himself more than I ever could.

I would ask him if he wanted to rethink that answer. Then I would just quietly wait until he rethought it. Sometimes that method has taken as long as fifteen minutes, but I don't argue with a nine year old. If he can come up with a lie he is smart enough to figure out he is going to have to sit there until he told the truth. Punishment would depend on what the lie concerned.
