I have to agree with this answer. Except in extreme cases (e.g. you have 10 psi in all of your tires), maintenance issues have a slight effect on fuel economy. Driving technique has a much larger influence.

Exactly what I would've said. I beg to differ with old school on the maintenance unless by (slight" he means anything less than 20%, which s how much my MPG improved merely by putting more air in my tires.

I recently heard aggressive driving can reduce efficiency by as much as 30%, though cumulative effects from low psi, low back pressure, low manifold pressure, off timing and poor spark could lead to much more than 30%, it is likely that the car would be immobile or uninsurable. (flat tires, blowing black smoke, back firing, etc...

I got my old Aerostar up to almost 24 MPG; nearly double it's EPA rating. Part of that was because I rarely pressed the long pedal more than absolutely necessary and part of it was a little maintenance and tweaking.
