The largest influence on fuel consumption is probably driving techniques. Fast starts and burning rubber, staying on the gas right to the last minute an braking hard, frequent changes in speed and fast driving all increase fuel consumption dramatically. Driving aggressively also increase the risks invloved with driving, and wear on the tires and car.
Some points other than driver error are tire pressure and balance, alignment, bearings and lubrication. Also the spark plugs should be checked periodically to ensure they are not fouled, timing should be set correctly, plug wires in good condition and good compression.

1.Make sure the tires are adequately inflated.
2.Don't use the air conditioner in summer.
    3. Don't drive fast with lots of high rev acceleration and heavy braking.
    4. Keep your speed as constant as possible.
    5. Try to avoid routes with lots of traffic lights, or reasons to stop and start.
    6. Make sure your engine is tuned.
    7. Roll down hills, and use gravity and the cars forward momentum as much as possible. Also try to time your arrival at lights to coincide with their changing to green so you don't have to stop.
    8. Walk those short distances you used to drive out of sheer laziness.

Ok...this is kind of hard to follow but I will try:

When you are on a long stretch of road and you see the red light way far away up ahead, slow down sooner by letting off the gas so you coast more slowly towards the light. Then, by the time you get there, it turns green and traffic moves, so you don't have to start from a stopped position nor waste already spent gas by breaking.

It takes awhile to get the hang of it but soon you will learn how to time it.

Also, I use cruise control on long open stretches of with no lights so that I don't speed (and speeding fast does use more gas).
