Minor traffic violations are routine, easy, fast and pull in money like crazy. Drug dealers are a lot of work, hard to catch, time consuming, difficult to prosecute and they don't yield any revenue. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, at the end of the day, it all boils down to money. It's the American way!

    Its still Ridiculous

I think it would be better to understand that it is the 'officer' rather than the broad statement of 'the police.' Not all are bad as not all are good.

i ask the same question, where i live we have officers on bicycles, in cars, on dirt bikes, and in gang patrol units all giving tickets for traffic violations, however there were 13 murders and two rapes last week in this town, all unsolved, I know where one of the rapist is right now, but i refuse to tell the police, because they have been known to catch the offender then tell the offender who told on them, and then me and my family ends up dead, I dont think so! I hate to say it but we settle for tickets here over solving real crime, because when you help solve a crime here, you end up a crime statistic.

Because there's more money in minor traffic violations and they DON'T have a narcotics bust quota!

Also, it's hard, time consuming, and expensive to convict someone of a felony. The motorist, however, is easy prey, and can be convicted simply on the basis of the cop's testimony, unless you can produce at least 2 credible and unbiased witnesses (ones who don't know you) who contradict him.

Go know thyself is THE RED QUEEN

Because street or beat cops are for patrolling the vacinity for crime and giving tickets.

The DEA is for drug enforcement.

    easy option.
They are going to get a result from going after law abiding citizens who make a silly mistake, rather than hardened criminals who have no fear of the law and may be carrying weapons.

"...openly selling drugs and the police know it." There's a big difference between knowing something and being able to prove it.
Judging by the tone of your question, I'm guessing that you've never been a police officer or took the opportunity to talk to any of them. Maybe you should, you'll learn a little about procedure and a little thing we like to call evidence.
Believe it or not, most of your drug arrests are going to come from traffic violations.
