Apparently the Germans are already doing this with much success so I guess it would be something to try and get the cars selling again.

I think it is a grand idea. I have an '84 Suburban that I plan to use in this new plan, but I'm going to wait until the fall when the 2010 model year is out. Either I will get a great deal on an unsold 2009, or I'll have the option for what comes out in 2010.

If I remember correctly, it wound up costing a few billion, and only saving us around 375 million. That's quite a disparity.

    Horrible idea

Waste of our money. We had to borrow another 3 billion dollars from the Chinese to pay for the program. What a waste, will end up costing us billions more in interest payments

Why should my tax money go to wealthy people to buy another car ? Many these people were trading in their second sand third car. How outrageous.

It's amazing to me that conservatives are blasting this progam. It is effectively the same as a tax rebate but with many additional benefits. It gets begins to reduce some dependency on foreign oil. But more importantly, it gets consumers to start spending again which is the main driver of the economy, it clears inventory of cars off car dealer lots which then means the auto companies have to start producing more cars, which means they need to rehire workers, which get them off welfare and working again. These workers can then start paying their mortgages and not having banks foreclose on their homes.

The democrats should have called this a tax rebate program.

I think I bought a lot of cars for a lot of dead beats. Do I get paid back when these people default on their loans like they did when they got money for their mortgages?

Not the dumbest way of spending tax dollars. In an ideal world it should not have done - with the one we got it may be of some help to some. +5

  • It's a good idea b/c it works. However, I don't have a clunker, so I'm going with the Cash for Chickens plan. You send in $35 and they send you a bunch of baby chickens, called "chicks" (the boys *and* the girls). You can raise them in your apartment. They like grain and bugs, so they'll take care of the roaches that come when you spread the grain on the floor.

When they grow up you can eat the eggs, eat the chickens, or sell the eggs and the chickens.

    How can you lose?

    +It's not a bad idea.

It gets rid of junk gas guzzling cars.

It gives business to auto manufactures, auto dealers, and banks and stimulates the economy.

It give financial assistance to someone who needs a new car.

The destruction, ( scrapping or old cars ), decreases the supply of old cars - so the value of everybody's automobile is driven upwards in the market.

Increases in business will allow Chrysler and GM to pay off their loans faster - which will provide extra money in the government coffers for other business.

New car ownership has a psychological benefit of increasing a persons moral - a good thing in uncertain times as these.

By removing inefficient "dirty" old cars, the environment will get a bit cleaner - and it will help us meet tough new global pollution standards as they come into affect in a few years.

Frankly it;s a great idea...Germany and a few other countries have been doing this for years - and it's wildly popular with everybody involved.

    Another good move Mr. President!

It's time for the centuries-old car companies whose only way of making any money is to keep our government in their pocket to die. It'll hurt, but so does pouring corn alcohol on a badly infected wound. This is just like popping painkillers to avoid cleaning out that seeping, infected pustule.

I think there will be alot of requirments to meet, and the new car will cost too much anyway.Unless you were already going to buy one,in which case you probably don`t have one now that is old or guzzlery enough to qualify. But I could be wrong.I`ve never bought a new car. They were all used.

I think they're doing it in germany, but with fuel rating requirements and also asking that the car be german made.

For the US, I support demanding fuel economy, but I'm not sure about US-made. I understand that the point is to put money into more US hands than just those at the dealership, but what good is it to buy off our old clunker, so we can buy a new car that will be a clunker in under 100k miles?
