Why don't we hear about any great modern poets? Will there ever be a poet who can compete with the greats like Poe, Rimbaud, Dickenson, Whitman, Blake...etc?

No. No one writes poetry any more, not to speak of. The real poets are song writers and even they have dropped off quite a lot.

There are some good modern poets, but 'modern' seems to mean anything in the last 50-100 years, so people like Plath, Ted Hughes, Benjamin Zephaniah and Wendy Cope count. The last 20 years don't seem to have produced much poetry on a grand scale though. Some of the best poets around are found in open poetry readings in village halls, as many, especially today's youth, aren't generally interested in it any more.
