  • In short, no. There are operas in many other languages including French, German, and even English. The reason we think of most opera as being Italian is simply because opera originated in Italy, so the most common language used in the Baroque and Classical period for opera was Italian.
  • I would just point out that, technically, the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber are operas. I know that they are called "musical", but they are dramas in which all of the lines are sung. That is the definition of an opera and they are in English.
