  • It's a way to give your monitor a break and cool down, but I heard that screen savers will wear your monitor components out faster than if you didn't use screen saver.
  • Early CRT monitors had a problem - the phosphors (the glowing coating onside the screen) would get dimmer after constant use - so if a computer is left on with a fixed image on hte screen, that image gets burned into the phosphor. It can be seen when it's off as a ghhostly image and when on, as dimmer patches on the screen. A screen saver keeps an image moving to stop this happening. These days, with green considerations, and especially with limited life LCD lamps, it's better to use the power features to turn the monitor off - save electricity and the screen. In Windows - open control panel, double click Power Options. My monitor goes off after 5 minutes idle.
