Hand down ~ history. For unknown reasons, especially the younger generations aren't interested in history.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. ~ George Santayana
Unfortunately for those younger generations, it's the truth.
good choice of category for this question - international issues! Anything which relates to countries outside USA
#1: Dialectic (logical argumentation and critical analysis of the arguments of others): it's never taught at all - not even in most colleges other than a Semester elective in Logic. Odds are, unless you're a Law student or a philosophy major, you'll never see it.
#2: History: US students at every grade, KG to College Senior, consistently score (on average) at the bottom of the developed world.
#3: (Any) Foreign Language: typically, FL classes aren't offered until JrHigh, which is much too late to be effective; FL education should begin in pre-school. Old Joke ...
*What do you call a person who speaks 2 languages?
- Bilingual
*What do you call a person who speaks 3 languages?
- Trilingual
*What do you call a person who speaks 1 language?
- An American!
This is just the tip of the Iceberg, of course. Americans are very poorly educated in anything regarding the Humanities - but what can you expect from a country that defines "SCHOLARSHIP" as "MONEY FOR QUARTERBACKS"?
But the fact is that 95% of American college grads today couldn't meet the entrance requirements or pass the entrance exams for even the most un-prestigious podunk landgrant college 100 years ago.
Regarding Geography specifically, Americans who attended public school between '65 and '87 were also typically very poorly educated in Geography, but in '87 a survey showed that over half of High School seniors couldn't find France on a map, and 15% couldn't find the US on one, and that prompted a major push for Geography -- and also was the motive behind/inspiration for, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" So Americans in their 20s are likely to be more knowledgable of Geography than Americans in their 30s and 40s.

Thank you Gene H. It sounds like you've done a lot of thinking on this subject. Are you doing anything to change it?
by travel breeze on March 27th, 2009
Yes, of course! Why do you ask?
by Gene H on March 27th, 2009
because I am inquisitive. I'm interested. Zealous. Concerned. haha. Are you a teacher? :)
by travel breeze on March 27th, 2009
Used to be. Won awards and all that. Now, I'm a know-it-all know-nothing! I actually did turn some kids onto the idea that learning wasn't too much of a waste of time. You?
by Gene H on March 27th, 2009
haha. When I was 18 I worked at a High School, as a tutor. After that, I worked mentoring teens with the City. Now, I work with a school for Homeless Children doing various things. I also am going to save the world (nothing wrong with big dreams, right?) But I make my living through recycling furniture.

Sorry, I was so excited to share my experience with you I forgot to comment on yours. I think it's so cool that you were a teacher. You remind me of my very favorite teacher, Mr.Stanko. (Sorry, I don't know if you're a man or woman)
