I don't know about this methodology in regard to their recruiting and retention practices. But they *definitely* do not hesitate to use these methods (as well as harassing legal maneuvers) against anyone they perceive as an "enemy" or, as they term them, "suppressive persons." They even use the term "Fair Game," coined by Hubbard himself, to refer to these practices.

Recruiting? Not so much. Getting new members in (called "regging") or getting them to sign on staff (referred to as "recruiting") are generally soft sell. The hard sell stuff usually comes into play when someone tries to leave or speak out and the cult doesn't want them to. And in that, I would agree that they do all kinds of dirty tricks type stuff to keep people in line. I've experienced it myself, back when I was in.

I wouldn't doubt it but i just want to warn you that people are going to grill you on what you are basing this assertion on. I would cite my sources for the assertion.

That's standard operating procedures for most religions.

The religion started as a tax scam and I think they're the one that puts rattle snakes in your mailbox so I would watch what you say about them. If people are stupid enough to pay for advancement in the church, they deserve what they get.

My problem is that the church is not taxed. I think all churches should pay their fair share of income and property taxes.

In general, NO. If this was their routine methodology there would be a lot more scandals and discloures, and they would have been broken up long ago. 'Brainwashing' is nowhere near as universally effective as popular belief makes it out to be.

In specific cases I am sure they have trampled the rights of people, fx by forcibly detaining people who wanted to leave. Of course they dont see it as evil, but as helping. Much as the 'deprogrammers' who kidnap people out of sects they have joined and retrain them think they are helping.

They're well known for litigious suppression of dissent, search Google for 'scientology fair game', at one point they ostracised several members and advocated shooting to kill.
Interesting that this question from 2009 has remained, where similar questions posted in 2012 have been removed.

I don't know that it does all those types of things, but I'm sure there's a whole lot of brain washing going on.

    Done. never again.

It depends. They go by Scientology Ethics. It's a book. They don't believe in breaking the law though. But going around, and loopholes wouldn't surprise me.
