Run mplayer/vlc under Linux under VMWare under Windows.
You can also use Winamp, available from www.winamp.com - I prefer Winamp 2.9 to the latest incarnations such as Winamp 5, if you can find an installer for Winamp 2.9 floating about on the Internet (hint: try Google :) then I strongly suggest you try that.
Failing my old favourite, classic Winamp 2, many people (including audiophiles) enjoy the features of foobar2000 - available from http://www.foobar2000.org . I have used it, and yes it is a very comprehensive piece of freeware, with many plugins available for it, but I'm more familiar with Winamp 2 so I stick with what I like best ;)
You can use Windows Media Player 7, 8, 9 and also WinAmp 2, 3. There more stuff available you just have to find it.
The iTunes music player, available for free at itunes.com
Real One and the Jukebox as well.
What is a good USB MIDI interface to buy? It must have software that is able to record and edit the music preferably multiple tracks.
