I think poe goes into the darkest corners of the mind. A place few would even admitt they have. He seems to bring our darkend creatures to life, we all somehow relate to his writting, in our fears, our nightmares or our imagination.
I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing you're after. Poe, for me, is the best at creating a haunting atmosphere, and he does it with a unique rhythm. Think of "Tell-Tale Heart", and the way he builds suspense with the thump-thumps. And "Pit and the Pendulum", with the slowly-inevitably-swinging pendulum. He has a rhythm in each story that builds suspensefully to a thunderous crescendo. You can look at his poem, "The Bells" which does the same thing. He expands on that in the short stories.
Poe thought that short stories were only long enough to be able to evoke one passion from the reader if they were to be considered at all effective or successful. For him, that feeling was usually terror or something like that but I like his general theory.
Poe offers a lot of logic and order in his poems and short stories. He famously created the detective and mystery genres.
