I'm doing a bit of video editing in Windows Movie Maker, but plan to transfer over to iMovie to do further editing. What file format would be best to make the transition from WMM to iMovie?

If you want to keep the quality of the editing video from WMM high then you will have to use avi file format as WMM is very limited in what it can do. Hopefully iMovie will be able to open the avi file and let you continue working with it. But I can see problems with this setup.
