  • I always catch my own live bait. If it's used whole on a hook then it gives off distress signals, which appear to attract many preditors like sharks. I often use the balloon method when fishing, tie a balloon to your line with a few ounces of weight on it, then add a trace of about six foot long and put your live bait on it. Then just cast it out and the wind usually helps to pull it out further from the beach or boat. When a decent fish hits it the Balloon then dissapears under the water or it starts to move across the water very quickly. Having the bait around six foot under the water does seem to be the best depth for attracting the bigger preditors over for a cheap dinner..
