How do you explain mental illness to someone who thinks that God will cure you of that "possession" or that God will "heal" you of it if you only have enough faith? can you explain it to someone like that?

I wouldn't bother, probably. Instead, I would work on debunking their position, but only if it seems like there's some slight chance of making headway. A lot of people believe all sorts of superstitions, even here in modern times. You can't wipe it out without generations of education.
