Why do authors insert (read:____) in their sentences?

If I understand your question correctly, and the time without an answer tends to tell me that, I'd say whatever you're reading is fairly dated and the practice has fallen off (read: is very old). It is/was a way of saying, "I'm saying *this* (but I really mean *this*), as in my example above. It's kinda stylistic and not too fashionable these days.
