Playstation 2 (PS2), while being an acceptable DVD player, has nothing on devices specifically made for DVD video playback. The PS2 is a hybrid device and lacks some features and gains some weaknesses that a normal DVD player will not have. For one, a PS2 lacks many options that a normal DVD player has such as Zoom-in, Slow-motion, and Alternate angles. Of course, one can always buy the PS2 remote to compensate for this weakness. But why do that when a cheaper yet higher quality DVD player has a remote packed in? Also, the PS2 is unable to recognize a select portion of DVD movies due to some issues with compatibility. Although such happenings are rare, I'd rather not spend money on a device that may oor may not play all of the movies I purchase when I can purchase a full-fledged DVD player that has full compatibility with ALL of my movies. Now don't get me wrong, the PS2 is a fine device. I own one and use it as my primary DVD playback machine. But I also own a normal DVD player and the quality of picture, the sound, and the numerous options of the latter eclipse the PS2's efforts by leaps and bounds. Your question is more of a matter of taste: do you want games with your movies or are you strictly a film buff? If you choose games, the PS2 is the way to go. But if you're all about that theater experience, a DVD player is your best bet. I hope I have helped you in your decision.
