Is it considered dangerous to catch the 1st wire (closest to the rear of the ship) when landing on an aircraft carrier? Do the LSOs give you a bad grade for that?

    From Wikipedia:
There are four parallel arresting wires, spaced about 50 feet (15 meters) apart, to expand the target area for the pilot. Pilots are aiming for the third wire, as it's the safest and most effective target. They never shoot for the first wire because it's dangerously close to the edge of deck. If they come in too low on the first wire, they could easily crash into the stern of the ship. It's acceptable to snag the second or fourth wire, but for a pilot to move up through the ranks, he or she has to be able to catch the third wire consistently.

No. While catching the 1 wire is less than ideal, it is acceptable and no less safe than any other wire.

The reason you don't actually aim for the 1 wire is that if you fall short, then you will have serious problems. If you aim for the 2 wire and fall short, you'll usually just catch the 1 wire and all will be good.

Aiming for the 3 wire... you may as well just wave off. At that point, you're just doing a fly-by as you're above the approved glidepath anyways. Even if you try to land, that leaves you with unacceptably little room for error as you're more likely to overshoot your landing in the first place in addition to the fact that the hook doesn't always grab; sometimes they bounce or slip.
