Why do mothers overdress their boys just because it's cold out? If he wants to be cold let him be cold.
Besides that I don't know what you should do because I don't know if these "slightest issues" have purpose or if you're just micromanaging him. Maybe you're bossy too much and pushing him over the edge? You have to give him some freedom to make up his own mind.

It's actually a temper issue across the board..in sports, school..trying to be perfect all the time. I actually really like your "micromanaging" point. perhaps your right..
I have three boys and he's the first. Birth order is DIRECTLY determined by the parents I think..

I know it's crazy, but I feel like I can relate to that boy. He sounds like a good boy, but if he's like me he'll interpret criticism as rejection and has to learn to emotionally balance things out and give up trying to be perfect.
Excellence is a better goal than perfection.

I completely agree..I don't want to take that drive out of him I just want to help him deal with it. I try and reinforce that it is not rejection and we are proud of him no matter how he performs, but he is so hard on himself. If you can relate, any suggestions on what might have worked on you during these times?
Maybe I'm just worrying to much and need to let it work itself out.

Good for you! That's just one way boys toughen their bodies in a masculine way. The motherly instinct to keep him warm would make sense whenever children get sick & die a lot, but not when they're healthy.
I'm not really that similar, he has a more fiery spirit. I don't see much for you to do, just let him pursue his goals.
