  • I don't think so, unless you re-wire it.
  • It is *technically* possible, but it would be easier to repair or replace your desktop monitor. Laptops generally lack video-in capability, so you would have to do some *major* work and would have to cannibalize your lappie in the process. How good are you with a soldering gun? I have picked up many a monitor for free. Nice ones too. My last three were 17", 19", and (recently) a Dell 20", and I didn't pay a penny for them. Worst case is that there are places you can go that might want $20 for one like that, or as little as $5 for something more normal like a 15". Now, if it were your laptop's screen that went out THEN it would be easy, since many laptops have video output.
  • It's possible that you could access your desktop machine via a network connection, if it is running an RDP (windows Remote Desktop) or VNC (*nix Virtual Console) server. This will allow you to access the desktop. If all you need is to access the files, then you might be able to access the machine through Network Neighborhood or equivalent, provided the machine is set up for that. If you acquired the machine second hand, it might be worth trying this. Otherwise you probably would already know if those servers are active on the desktop machine. I don't think that they are enabled by default in Windows, and I know they are not in Linux.
