Where did the term of "troll" originate on AB? I've seen it used several times and I was just wondering where the slang came from lol.

It has been used before Answerbag.... mostly on role-playing games and message board communities. In folklore, trolls were known to wait at bridges for innocent people passing by and then attack them. Trolls always cause problems. When you think about these factors it's not hard to see why we call some people trolls.

The term troll is used in many forums across the internet for people that are disruptive, unpopular, or rude. It's not just on AB.

I would imagine it comes from the 3 Billy Goats Gruff, where the troll hides under the bridge and abuses the goats from a hidden position and torments them with anonymity.

Trolls on boards are similar, they sit in wait for a poster who is unsuspecting and then begins to pick on them, sometimes anonymously and sometimes identifying themselves... most often anonymously.

Their behavior and display is grotesque in nature thus the furthurence of the comparison.
