Calculators these days function based around logic chips - these use Boolean logic rules to take the inputs and work them out (I would assume using a form of binary coded decimal, as of course all computers and computational devices work on binary as a basis). Wikipedia is always a good place to start for answering these kind of questions; in this case it has a comprehensive article (read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculator) on how calculators work, what goes into using them, all sorts.
