  • The cam is generally the uppermost wheel that is part of the accessory belt system, usually on the passenger side of American engines. This is because the cam drives the valves and also governs piston timing. The lowest accessory pulley is typically the oil pump, the second lowest the alternator or A/C, depending on the options, there should be a small idler and a small tensioner, but the crank will be one of the largest pulleys on the accessory [serpentine] belt for an '02, and should be connected directly to the valve train. The crank sensor is generally attached to the cam, a Hall-effect sensor and an electromagnet (Hall-Effect generates a voltage rise every time it passes top-dead-center of the #1/4/6 piston, whichever is first in firing order, and usually the first piston on the passenger side) Sometimes there is a small rotary Hall device on the right side of the camshaft, but this is rare because the thermostat and recirculation equipment are generally situated there. You should get a Chilton/Haynes manual, open it an d make sure it has the correct information (I live in a city where one library has almost every Haynes and Chilton available).
