The BEST would be Firefox. However I must say that Zonealarm, AVG and Trillian are also quite handy and Media Player Classic (not affilliated tih Media Player) rounds out my personal top 5. I think that Windows XP Pro is the only non-freeware program I run aside from a few games. EDIT - Due to various obscure reasons, I have switched to Comodo for my free firewall and Pidgin for IM. However, neither have teh utility factor of MLDonkey with the Sancho GUI.

adaware or lime wire

Until lately, my answer would have been Firefox. But not long ago, I found a very powerful conversion program called Super. http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html It boggles my mind what this program can do. It can convert practically any multimedia format to any other format. AVI to MPEG-4? Done. WMA to MP3? Done. MOV to DivX? Also done. The GUI is a little intimidating, but it isn't impossible to learn. The best part is that all of the codecs needed to do the conversion are built in. This program wouldn't be useful to everyone, but if you've ever had a music file or video in the wrong format and wish you could change it - Super is the tool. I can't believe that it's free.

Thank God for the person that said Ubuntu. I was getting scared reading things like "WinAmp". Yes, Ubuntu is the best freeware (or, more appropriately, open-source) I have gotten on the Internet. It blows Windows and Mac away completely. I'll never look back from the days of Windows. As far as typical software goes, I would say the best freeware I've gotten is either amaroK or The GIMP (amaroK is only for Linux, The GIMP is for Linux also, but there's a version for Windows as well). amaroK is a music player, that integrates cleanly into the desktop environment, lets you sample tracks without opening them (just hold your mouse over the file), even on external media, it builds a database of your collection, fetches lyrics to your music from the internet, and connects to your iPod/Zen/iRiver/whatever. The GIMP is the open-source alternative to Photoshop, and is super-functional and perfect for most uses of graphics editing/creating.

Too many to count, and here's why: LOTS of great free software and games at these sites: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ http://www.game.giveawayoftheday.com/ Mostly new developers offering their fully-licensed software for a single 24-hour period. ** For open-source (both PC and Mac) programs try: http://mashable.com/2007/09/23/open-source/ http://www.dmoz.org/ ** For free software try: http://www.nonags.com/ http://bearbottoms1.com/ http://www.majorgeeks.com/ http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm http://www.ablestable.com/resources/free/free.html http://100-downloads.com/ http://www.1000files.com/ ** For MOBILE apps, try Handango: http://www.handango.com/FreeAppFriday.jsp ** If you would like more links, just ask. I have dozens upon dozens of them.

For more than ten years now, my OS and nearly all the software that I run has been freeware downloaded from the internet. There's so much of it that I can't really name a particular favorite. Ubuntu's pretty good, Fedora was nice too. Firefox is nice, and Battle for Wesnoth. Tremulous is fun, and so is Audacity(when it works!)

ok i scanned through 88 answers i saw (open office & firefox) seem to have been the most common ones / i have to agree with open office / as i have vista and had big time problems with works 9 / and have deleted it !! and installed open office / problem solved there !!! / but for firefox browser / yes i use it as my default browser, its much safer than internet explorer / but for us yahoo e-mailers / we still need internet explorer / as i have found it quite problematic to try and download (or create) yahoo email attachments with firefox / for my answer on the best piece of free software i have come across on the internet / i go with the media player category / and select "jet audio basic" (i did not see it, in the 88 answers i scanned through) http://www.filehippo.com/download_jetaudio/ at filehippo we can even get older versions. and that is what i like, the version 6.2.8. for jet audio basic is the one i like to stick with / it's sound quality for music, is far better that windows media player / and it can play almost 60 formats of audio & video files / and is full of extra features too
