Help answer this question below.
Firefox
Until lately, my answer would have been Firefox.
But not long ago, I found a very powerful conversion program called Super.
http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html
It boggles my mind what this program can do. It can convert practically any multimedia format to any other format. AVI to MPEG-4? Done. WMA to MP3? Done. MOV to DivX? Also done. The GUI is a little intimidating, but it isn't impossible to learn. The best part is that all of the codecs needed to do the conversion are built in.
This program wouldn't be useful to everyone, but if you've ever had a music file or video in the wrong format and wish you could change it - Super is the tool. I can't believe that it's free.
OpenOffice!
Changing to Firefox has been wonderful! I love Adblock as well

ok i scanned through 88 answers i saw (open office & firefox) seem to have been the most common ones / i have to agree with open office / as i have vista and had big time problems with works 9 / and have deleted it !! and installed open office / problem solved there !!! / but for firefox browser / yes i use it as my default browser, its much safer than internet explorer / but for us yahoo e-mailers / we still need internet explorer / as i have found it quite problematic to try and download (or create) yahoo email attachments with firefox / for my answer on the best piece of free software i have come across on the internet / i go with the media player category / and select "jet audio basic" (i did not see it, in the 88 answers i scanned through)
http://www.filehippo.com/download_jetaudio/
at filehippo we can even get older versions. and that is what i like, the version 6.2.8. for jet audio basic is the one i like to stick with / it's sound quality for music, is far better that windows media player / and it can play almost 60 formats of audio & video files / and is full of extra features too
Open Office, Photo Filtre, CCleaner, and Firefox
My top 5 is probably this:
Firefox (browser)
The GIMP (bitmap image editor)
Inkscape (vector image editor)
foobar2000 (audio player)
Orbiter (spacefight simulator)
Firebug is an extension that can be added to FireFox. It is a great product, a lot like Adobe Dreamweaver. It is a WYSIWYG product. FireFox also has a lot of other extensions for developers or developer-wana-bes.
Open Office ... I have two versions, the newest ones for Linux and for MS-Windows.

DVD Shrink
Microsoft suite
DAP 9 accelerator. is the best freeware in my sight.
CAVESTORY
Mozzila firefox
When I downloaded the program Paint.Net.
The special effects and textures you can apply
to paintings and photos is awesome.
When you work with something it can be turned
into something completely different.
1st - Firefox (browser)
2nd - foobar2000 (player)
3rd - Frets on Fire (game, guitar hero clone)
Open office, Firefox, VLC media player, and AVG.
I also run a computer, ( I have several ), with Umbuntu, which is a good FREE LINX distribution.
I can get everything for free in the internet but freeware, i would say firefox.
ZoneAlarm Firewall & AVGFree.
Open office.
Wondershare YouTube Downloader.
For more than ten years now, my OS and nearly all the software that I run has been freeware downloaded from the internet. There's so much of it that I can't really name a particular favorite. Ubuntu's pretty good, Fedora was nice too. Firefox is nice, and Battle for Wesnoth. Tremulous is fun, and so is Audacity(when it works!)
Opera Mini Browser (for mobile). This piece of s/w has made my life so easy.

Thank God for the person that said Ubuntu. I was getting scared reading things like "WinAmp". Yes, Ubuntu is the best freeware (or, more appropriately, open-source) I have gotten on the Internet. It blows Windows and Mac away completely. I'll never look back from the days of Windows. As far as typical software goes, I would say the best freeware I've gotten is either amaroK or The GIMP (amaroK is only for Linux, The GIMP is for Linux also, but there's a version for Windows as well). amaroK is a music player, that integrates cleanly into the desktop environment, lets you sample tracks without opening them (just hold your mouse over the file), even on external media, it builds a database of your collection, fetches lyrics to your music from the internet, and connects to your iPod/Zen/iRiver/whatever. The GIMP is the open-source alternative to Photoshop, and is super-functional and perfect for most uses of graphics editing/creating.
avast! and i dont realy kno the best

I'm not sure why exactly I prefer FF, though the tabbed browsing was a huge novelty until IE7, but I've been so indoctrinated on AB that I have to agree with this answer!
