Help answer this question below.
Yes it is a sport!
In a few of these answers some people say that it is just entertainment? and a sport requires competition. Well you can check that off. Because chearleading is a competitive sport! We lift people in the air for crying out loud! we tumble, dance, jump, all of that. And there are NATIONAL competitions. We sweat, work hard in support of our football and basketball teams. but when those seasons are over, its our turn to compete as well. so i must say that it is very much a sport.
This may be a tricky question to answer, but it does seem to be a sport due to the physicality involved. Seems to take some gymnastic and rythmic movement, and mix with strength, agility, and endurance.
So yes, it is a sport, just not one I personally would be a spectator of! But I don't watch golf, swimming, fishing, etc. It is probably more of a niche sport, one for a select group of people.
Now don't ask about the spelling bees on ESPN, I have no answer for that!!!
No.
It takes athleticism, strength, talent, etc. But it is no more a sport than ball room dancing is a sport.
It's entertainment.
Yes it is a Sport. It requires Gymnastics and Dance and a lot of hard work is involved in the training
No, it's not a sport, even though it shares many of the talents that other sports require. Apart from anything else, sports tend to be intended as a competition. Cheerleading is intended as a form of entertainment, even if one can have cheerleading competitions.
i guess if they consider golf a sport, this could be one also
If you guys look up the Title IX requirements, cheerleading doesn't fit the requirements to be considered a sport, this is the same title that requires colleges to waste thousands, maybe millions, in scholarship dollars to these wana be athletes.
Also, eveeeeryone in favor of cheerleading makes this point, 65%, 70%, 55%, the number is always different, but it is always over 50%, which means all these bitches got their facts straight..., so 55-70% of high school girl injuries are from cheerleading, but what else can high school girls really do? Basketball, not very physical. Soccer, alittle risky yes. Lacrosse, you can't hit in girl's Lacrosse. Softball, I got hit square in the face with a softball when I was 9, it doesn't hurt at all.
I don't understand how getting hurt at an activity, makes it any more of a sport... If anything, it means your not good enough to avoid injury.
Last point that everyone always makes is the definition of a sport...
Look up the definition of a sport, it is way to general and unspecific to be a correct definition, many people believ this and organizations are even thinking of getting rid of it and replacing it.
Because if you took that very same definition, Sex could be considered a sport...
i think yes one of the reasons is that its energetic and u have to have strength and flexibility but people say no but if it isnt then neither is ballet because all u do is dance, soo i can do that any time.........but that again is my opinion like if u think it is.........if u dont then again its only my opinion!!!
Arguments can be made on either side. In my highschool cheerleading days long ago, getting on the team was mostly a popularity contest. Today it involves much more discipline, athleticism, strength, endurance, and individual and team training in professional gymnastics in order to meet published standards, compete and score points against other cheerleading teams at state and national competitions. I have seen the competitions on TV and have seen team members dropped, including one fatality. It involves all the same risks and dangers of many other more traditional sports.
If gymnastics and ice skating and other competitive activities where judges award points for specific maneuvers are considered "sports," I see no reason why this cannot be included. My thinking has changed ever since Skateboarding is recognized in the Olympics!
I thin it is, I play football and the cheerleaders on the sideline train just as we do. In different ways of course. I know I couldn't be a cheerleader, but lots of girls could play football if they wanted. It is a sport. there are national competitions etc..
Traditional cheerleading is , of course, not a sport, but an entertainment aimed at rallying team support. Modern competative cheerleading is indeed something quite different-but it is still not a sport. It is performance art. A sport is (1) built around a game concept and (2) you have real time access to the score; performance art, on the other hand, has judges who evaluate post performance.
