Some studies done have shown that a large number of people who "seem to dislike" or discriminate against the physically disable are responding to an emotional response within themselves..;)

Some people in wheelchairs are total assholes, my guess is that the people you saw being mean to people in wheelchairs were probably responding to asshole behavior. Then again they might have been assholes themselves and were picking on the disabled for no good reason. Either way the important thing to realize is that most people regardless of age, race, gender, physical condition, etc. are (always have been and always will be) assholes. Many people find this realization hard to cope with, I recommend drinking..., a lot. I hope this helped.
