  • Unless you are a minor (under 18 years of age) you can expect the process to be - you file, you are denied - you appeal you are denied again - you go to court, retain attorney and then 20 to 26 months after your filing you are granted SSI. Of course the attorney you get will want to cash that check for you, and he/she will take out her part. Please to note how many SSI attorneys are out there - pick up your local phone book and look up attorneys, many just specialize in SSI cases. Of course you receive all benefits retroactive to the date you first applied. Lets say you applied last year and then were denied twice and are going before the judge in about 6 months time - all the money that you would have received from last year to the date you are finally granted is sent to you in one lump sum. This process weeds out the 'weaker' applicants, many who do not know how this process works 'give up' this means the state doesn't have to pay out as much. Yes it is cold and cruel, however too many have abused and attempted to abuse this system thus things are made this hard to make it harder for the abusers to get on.
  • If you have already had your claim accepted, it should arrive within two or three months.
