Help answer this question below.
There are a few diet sodas (for example, Diet–Rite™, and Walgreens' house-brand diet cola) are sweetened with sucralose, AKA Splenda™, which is a modified form of sugar. Sucralose tastes like regular sugar, but is not absorbed or processed by our digestive systems.
Otherwise, most diet sodas are sweetened with aspartame or saccharine, and do not contain any sugar at all.
.
Diet sodas do not contain sugar but other molecules are used to provide sweetness ("artificial" sweeteners).
The two most common sweeteners in diet sodas today are sucralose (Splenda) and aspartame (Equal or Nutrasweet). Neither have a significant amount of calories. Sucralose is made from sucrose (table sugar) but the final molecule is much different in its chemistry. It is far sweeter than sugar just as other artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharine (Sweet 'n Low).
Aspartame is made from two amino acids. These are the building blocks of proteins so in actuality Equal is a protein.
