Help answer this question below.
Be the bartender. Dont insert yourself into peoples conversation unless invited, and then keep it succinct and non-commital.
If you feel you must cut someone off- do it. Dont be shy or applogetic about it.
Keep busy. Wash glasses, check drink levels, ice levels. "If you can lean, you can clean" was my motto.
When a drink is ordered ask the patron if they want a specific brand- up sell. Well brand is cheap.Top shelf brings in the $$
Never confront a patron about a low tip. Its poor etiquette and can get you fired.
Check all glasses for lipstick. That stuff is hard to get off. Water spot are not acceptable either.
When you serve the drink make sure your fingers are well below the "lip line" of the glass.Serve wine by holding only the stem- never the bowl
Never touch your hair or face while in public view. If you do, wash your hands immediatly
Make sure you know your drinks! Always be polite and shot smiles to everyone (better tips this way) Be chatty and get to know your customer but not so chatty that you are distracted! It also helps to know your customer so that you know how intoxicated the guest is becoming. Always, always treat the wait staff well! Dress aprropriate and you're good to go!
If you have your smart serve (not sure if they have that anywhere else other then Canada) but it is a really great coarse to learn affects of alcohol, evicting a guest, rules and regulations. It really helps and builds your confidence in what to do in situations.
That was my best and worst job! Always smile and pretend to like the guest, always call a cab for the impaired (you can be pesonanlly liable now days), always serve bottled beer with an offer of a mug/glass, and know your drinks. It is amazing how many people have no clue what they want!
They will give you training , do not worry if it is a nice place they will not want to see you mess up, so they will help you as much as they can and as long as you keep smiling at the customers that is half the battle. Pulling pints and coffee machines are easy by the end of the day you will be fine. Guinness is the only drink that is a problem if you have to pour that or get it from a barrel make sure the glass is on its side and you do it VERY slowly and ask them for a proper Guinness scraper to take the top off. or you land up with very little guinness and all froth Good Luck
Only for good service :D
If you see a guy dressed like my avatar...give 'em a free drink!
Seriously...customer service is #1. Listen to your customers.
If things go wrong, strip.
be on the lookout for fake $500:00 american express travellers checks.
drinking on the job is considered theft.
do not refuse to work overtime and holidays.
do not 'bang'your co-workers.
make sure you get your barmans'/barmaids license and marry someone in the airline industry.this allows you and your spouse to travel the world for free and to stay in the best hotels for only pennies.
don't listen to people telling you to smile all the time, just be yourself.finally,do not spend your tips unless you are on tour.
first destination,BARBADOS,WEST INDIES.
What matters the most is that you smile.
Fuck - I hat that - but it seems to play out as true.

Thank you kdawwg, very helpful

I have high standards for service. A server once opened a bottle of wine at the table and left some of the foil ragged at the mouth of the bottle- and the wine poured across the foil as it went into the glass. I just looked at her and then at the table of guests. And asked for a new bottle.

Oh God, please don't come to my restaurant, especially not tomorrow.. (I'm joking..)
by jangobean on February 9th, 2007
I'll be at the end of the bar taking notes. Whats the restaurant?
by VOD on February 9th, 2007
Well, if you really plan to come and visit, I'd set off now if I was you.
It's on a different continent.

Have you waited tables b4?
by VOD on February 9th, 2007
I worked in an Italian restaurant once waiting tables, it didn't work out too well, I hated it and walked out after 2 hours. I'm definitely behind the bar though tomorrow.

Are you ready for the big nite?
by VOD on February 10th, 2007
I'm just getting ready now I start at 6pm - just less than 2 hours to go and I'm really nervous, I'm just gonna get something to eat, although I'm not hungry - too nervous, but I'll have to eat something. Thanks for asking, I'll let you know how I get on. x
by jangobean on February 10th, 2007
I am very interested. I want you to enjoy it and do very well. Bartenders can make BUTT LOADS of $$$. OH YEah- keep mints in your pocket and a lighter handy for the guests that smoke. As soon as you see them go for the smoke, get your lighter out. Nothing impressed my guests more than a ready light- if smoking is still permitted at the bar where you are working.

kdawwg - it went ok i think, they've asked me back on wednesday, so I can't have been that bad! Tips are shared between all the staff, it's a restaurant, so most tips are left on the tables, the girl who I was working with was nice to me, but she kept 'showing' me things instead of letting me do them myself. I had trouble with the till, and couldn't get the milk frothy for the cappucinos, apart from that I think I did ok. Six hours though, without a break or a sit down, my back is killing me. I'll go back on Wednesday and then take it from there.
by jangobean on February 10th, 2007
Yup- Hard work. Youll get the cappucino machine. It was your first night.
by VOD on February 10th, 2007
Hi Kdawwg, thought you might like an update. Well, I'm a whizz with the cappucinos now, nearly got the hang of the till, most of the people are very nice, except the manager (owner's son) and one of the front of house staff - a young guy. I've been taken on properly now and works Wed's and Sat's. I think I'm doing really well, although no-one has told me so...do I care? I'll be running the joint soon.
by jangobean on February 16th, 2007
WOOHOO!!! The Cap Master!!! As far as the owners son goes- some people cant handle power without being jerks. I am very excited for you and proud of you. I know you dont know me- but I can still be proud of you.You WILL be running that place and look damn good doing it too.! CONGRATS!!!! (I am throwing you a party in my head. Lots of cool people say congrats and are toasting your success.Oh, is that... IT IS! Prince Charles is having a conversation with Donald Trump about your cappucino!)

AH- smart I will after I get done. Now- be a dear and get me a breve
by VOD on February 16th, 2007
Certainly Sir. (What's a breve?)
by jangobean on February 16th, 2007
A breve (BREH-vay)is a latte with steamed cream or half and half instead of milk. Some peeps call them breve latte, some just say breve. I just say breve.Now-spit spot.(I got that from Mary Poppins. I hope I used it correctly)Have they told you the difference between capuccinos and lattes?
by VOD on February 16th, 2007
Firstly, I have never ever ever heard anyone say spit spot (apart from Mary Poppins). I have also never heard of a breve, but I do know the difference between a latte and a cappucino.
Our lattes are in a bigger cup, the coffee isn't as strong, and they have more milk than cappucinos. Although the coffee craze has caught on in Britain, we do have lots of Starbucks's in the city centre, my restaurant is out in the countryside, and different restaurants make their coffees in different ways. But basically, a latte is a weak milky coffee, and a cappucino is a normal strength coffee with frothy milk on top? N'est pas?
by jangobean on February 16th, 2007
It may be where you are. I understand cultural differences- but where Im from a both start with a shot (or two or three-whatever the patron wants)of espresso (do you know what an espresso is?). For a breve latte- steam half and half, por a little into the cup, add espresso, add steamed half and half til full. No froth. A latte is the same only use milk or 2% milk. No froth. Cappucin is the same, but it gets froth.
