Help answer this question below.

I just had a fight via e-mail with a realtor who placed an ad with spelling and grammar errors to a property site I subscribe to. When I corrected her she attacked me with malice! So I ask, why don't people care about grammar and spelling anymore?

Oh, Ausbabe, I feel your pain. In addition to the flood of horrible grammar and stinky spelling, I suffer through phrases like, "i hav luv 4 u" or "u r so kewl" from casual acquaintances in email and regular paper memos.

I think it's a combination of laziness and the widespread opinion that sloppiness is somehow cool.

There has always been a problem of folks committing grammatical errors in writing and speech, but the problem was previously considered one to be ashamed of. The idea that grammatical errors are OK is probably something rooted in popular culture.

It's too bad that people who neglect standard English don't realize that potential employers and colleagues will not be impressed.

- Absolutely. And with the addition of a spell checker on almost every computer, knowing how to spell isn't a neccessity anymore. That's if people remember to USE the spell checker, that is ...

- Thank you for the comments - it's appreciated like you wouldn't believe! The depths to which this realtor has stooped are insulting me, trying to insult my teaching skills, putting me down as a person and finally telling me she doesn't have time. hah! So I wrote back, gave her an analysis of her character via her writing and corrected yet another error. lol. I'm not spiteful and arrogant by nature, I do however stand up for what I believe!

The answer is simple. The world just moves too fast. No one now-a-days has the time to write out words or sentences properly. No one has the time to sit down and take care into what their writing. There's too many things going on at once. I'm contradicting myself right now, because I do the same thing. When I write to my friends, I always say "ur" or "u r", and I am trying to stop. Now I'm only doing it in IMs, I'm cutting back, but can you blame me for talking like that? I'm 16, its a way of life for us. I also have to admit, I sort of like the world fast-paced. I mean, I love it when things move fast, the internet, traffic, everything, even grammar. I don't mind it at all.
The other reason could be that they all fell asleep in English Class...

I worked a good few years in the graphic design industry. I can tell you that if clients found a typo they would refuse payment or demand a reprint - and rightly so.
I think that advertising agencies often 'play' with words for impact and the 'wow' factor and kids often see the adaptations as the true spelling. When they are being bombarded with all these pseudo-words from all areas of the media they often just use the most 'popular' spelling.

- Yeah, that drives me nuts as well but it's more like she had words that were poorly spelled. Look, we all make spelling mistakes - I'm sure I've made heaps here but not where it counts (not that AB isn't important enough to make an effort) like in a professional situation. And I'm sure you're the same.

I think it's all the bloody texting turning the world into Farenheit 411. Ever pick up a copy of USAToday? It's practically in the pictograms they make the McDonald's employees touch to order your "food". Scary.

- I get why fast food places have the pictograms - so they don't have to rely on spelling / grammar in employees but also due to when in a rush the pictograms can help make things run more smoothly. But that said, I do think it's all the texting and one of my pet dislikes is when friends / family text me with really bad grammar / deliberate misspelling and all just to save space in messages. I can read text, alot of us can, but that doesn't mean we're happy to receive it. And another whine of mine (as if there's not another one lol), since when was it okay to send people birthday cards via text message???

I care, but I have noticed others do not, as well. If your realtor became defensive, I suspect she is sensitive about her educational background and perhaps did not ever learn proper grammar and spelling.

- You hit the nail on the head exactly! The argument continued online for a few days via e-mail and in the end I called her out and pointed out some potential flaws. I should feel bad for being so effortlessly malicious (and no, not bragging) but I just don't. She needed to take a long hard look at herself and the energy she was giving out to the world and ultimately her own family and herself.

They do not seem to have a thought for doing spelling or grammar correctly.

I had Service sheets and Bookmarks made by the funeral home and they put that the death occurred on the 28th Dec 2007 .

The women offered "IF" they had made a mistake to refund the money . I said that I wanted a proper reprint . Now because of a stupid careless mistake I have to send letters all over the world

You are right people just do not care no matter what the circumstance

- They do care - my school put out a newsletter that stated what students had gotten into what uni courses etc and for me they said I'd gotten into nothing. My parents were furious and wanted to sue the school because I had little cousins at the school and their parents would take it to be absolute truth despite it not being true at all. The school brushed it off and played it down saying it didn't matter because I'd not gotten into Uni anyway (at that stage I hated the school I was in so didn't bother trying) but into TAFE (Technical and Further Education - think Community College) but a month later I sat a couple of interviews and cruised my way into Uni. Still my parents weren't arguing for me to be listed as having gotten into Uni they just wanted it to say I'd gotten into further education or even TAFE if the school wanted to be so pedantic and stuck up (it was a private school and as my parents weren't paying for a wing of the school they didn't give worth a damn about me).

Yes Ausbabe, I agree, people seem to be careless about their spelling.
If you give me the link of that real estate I will have a look and complain also! Ha!

- I wish I could but I can't find the advertisment anymore. It's just that seeing as microsoft word does have a spell check (and a grammar check that isn't always reliable) that works for the most part I don't understand spelling errors when technology is being used to produce work. It just seems careless.

- I know! I have heard that some businesses make spelling errors deliberately so they attract more attention.
  I have seen many errors on signs outside shops as well- it's very tempting to go in and complain about it.
