  • The Jewish laws of keeping Kosher are many and complex. The meat and milk restriction stems from a passage in Exodus forbidding one from boiling a (goat) kid in its mother's milk. It was extended by Rabbinic rulings to such things as cheese rennet (cheese is curdled by a small piece of veal stomach lining). Cheeseburgers are out! Fish are considered "Pareve" (Neutral) and can be eaten during either meat or dairy meals. The more observant will not use the same plate or utensils while eating the fish during a meat meal, nor will they mix fish and meat together in a recipe. Kosher fish are those that have both fins and scales. No catfish, swordfish, eels, sturgeon, shellfish, or octopus!
