It varied a lot depending on what part of the country you lived in. In England people were no longer tied to the land, this ended pretty much after the plague when peasants realised they could sell their labour to the highest bidder. Life was still mostly agrarian with peasants paying rent to landlords & keeping any surplus. There was welfare of sorts for those unable to work.
