I've taught middle school band, several junior college classes, and university-level physics. There are different sorts of credentials required at each level. Sometimes provisional or temporary certificates are issued by the state under certain circumstances, and it can get fairly complicated. No license is required to teach at the college level anywhere of which I am aware, but the teacher still needs to hold a degree with a certain number of credits in the subject.
