Missions are not mandatory, but are highly encouraged. They typically last 2 years during which the missionary travels to their assigned place to spread the Gospel. A 'class' is taken beforehand to learn about where they will be traveling, how to teach the lessons, learn the language, etc. It is all lined out in the Missionary Handbook.

A mission is simply going out anywhere in the world, and preaching the gospel. They do all they can to get their message out. It lasts about 2 years, and there are certain rules that apply when on the mission. However, a mission is not mandatory, but its hard to find a male lds member who does not look forward, or has already been on a mission.
