I never was ashamed. My mother was a "house wife" full time with 3 kids. My father was a professional and worked 6 days a week. He was in law. I was proud of them both for what they did for their family.

No, I've always been very proud of the fact that my father has a steady job and was able to care for his family.

    Yes, yes I am.

I'm not ashamed of my mum. She has worked her arse off since she was 15. She is a secretary, but has been many things, from stacking shelves, to ironing, to a teaching assisstant, anything to keep food on the table. That is something to be proud of.

Mt dad on the other hand, I am very ashamed and embarassed about. He is a milkman. Now believe me, there is nothing wrong with being a milkman. You know what is wrong? That the only reason you are a milkman is because you got your arsed kicked into prison after stealing from the company you worked for. And now no one will employ him. So his daddy payed everything he owed and gave him a franchise. He doesn't deserve to earn money after he took so much and didn't pay for it.

That is something to be ashamed of.

My Dad was a college drop out who got a job with the county road commission as a sewer inspector and my Mom was a housewife who went back to school in her 40s, graduated with honors, but never interviewed for a single job.

No, I'm not embarrassed. I'm very proud that my Dad was able to support the family and my Mom's education. I am, however, resentful that it took me 10 years to work my way through college, paying for it all myself.

Why should I have any need to be embarrassed about something that puts food on the table every day?

No, my mom is a pretty successful tax assessor and my dad is a farmer. They both own/operate their own business and work harder than most people I know.

    No, I was never embarrassed.

When I was young, my mom ran a daycare business out of the house. Now, she works for the city planning department. My Dad is retired now, but worked in the telecommunications department of a really big stockbroker company for a long time. But, before he got that job, he worked wherever he had to to take care of the family and pay all the bills.

My parents have worked really hard to get where they are now.

When I was in college sometimes I felt like no one understood me because I was the only person who was a first generation college student that grew up in a blue collar family.

But I wasn't embarrased by that, I just got the feeling that no one truely understood that aspect of my life.
