Let me elaborate: First he refuses to go through it with the Dwarves, then, on the return journey with Bilbo, He STILL wont enter it, taking instead the aurdorus 600 mile detour which he warned Bilbo against! I'm sure the elf-king would've provided supplies, mounts & an escort.
