Because "he" has a handbag, but is called Bob, which is allegedly a male name. This offends some cliche-ridden individuals. Since sponges are hermaphroditic, it is difficult to see how one could actually be gay - or all of them are gay.

if u look at some of the episodes, then you will see. the main episode had to be when he and patrick took care of that little clam thing. spongebob played the role of the mom and so on.....

Maybe because he enjoys being in his underwear so much. I sometimes tend to think he spends more screen time in his briefs than fully clothed.

Because he has never dated anyone eventhough he's an adult and it seems like he has a crush on Squidward.

First of all, for all who have replied that he is a sponge and thereby implying that sponges can't be gay. Remember sponges are people too! The reason Spongebob is thought to be gay is because he holds hands a lot with his good friend, Starfish Patrick.

He is a sponge, and therefore CANNOT be gay, but there are some episodes where he acts effeminate or others do. Mostly in the more reacent episodes, like where Patrick pretends to be a girl, and several male characters attempt to get a date, or when Squidward becomes handsome, and the women, AND men faint at the sight of him; just to name a couple of example.

Most of you people have no full proof answers. Just because he holds hands with his [best] friend doesn’t make him gay it just makes him friendly. Plus it’s a show for kids I know it makes adults laugh as well and myself I’m 13 and I’ve been watching SpongeBob since before I could walk and I’ve always loved him but it was invented 4 kids and isn’t being friendly something EVERY kids show teach ? The rainbow is fucking hilarious I love that episode that doesn’t make him gay, him repeating "imagination" with the rainbow is funny I enjoy that episode and I’m not the only one. In the episode when the Krusty Krab is on the go, Spongebob says, "Bye Squidward! Bye Mr. Krabs!" Then Spongebob says in a soft tenderly tone, "Bye Squidward!" After that, Spongebob says, "I like Squidward!" Such a point out that hes gay!!!
