Helicopters were definitely used in WW2 and were at an advanced state of development in Germany but not of course in America where the unreliable Sikorsky craft were very feeble and only made a few missions such as the relatively famous Burma rescue.

The german helicopter factories were under regular attack but they produced 2 main production Helis, the transport Fa-223 which had a top speed over 100knots, could carry a crew of 4 and 12 troups externally on benches, and had a ceiling of 23,000 ft. It could carry two 500lb bombs, had machine guns and could carry loads of 1.5 tons suspended below by cable. They could carry complete airframes of other aircraft in this manner and could airlift 75mm field artillery. The Fa-223 was also the world's first helicopter gunship mounting a MG15 machine gun in the nose. It could also airlift wheeled vehicles such as light trucks, something not achieved by Allied helis till the late 1940s and 50s.
