  • a woman named Johanna
  • He did not have a wife.
  • yes he did
  • Johanna Gesina van Gogh
  • Vincent Van Gogh was never married. Johanna was Theo Van Gogh's wife. Theo was Vincent's younger brother and sponsor. Johanna saved Vincent Van Gogh's pictures and is thus of great importance to Vincent's fame. A lesser woman would have pitched his pictures as he sold only one painting in his lifetime.
  • Gaugin
  • I thought he was gay....
  • a lonely woman
  • Vincent never married. The nearest he got to being so was perhaps by declaring his love for Kee Vos Stricker his cousin. She rejected his advances. He later took in a lady called Sien (see the drawings 'Sorrow' and 'The great lady') of whomb he told his brother, Theo, that he wanted to marry. For a short while he had a virtual marriage partner with the painter Gauguin. I think that Painting and Drawing was the true marriage partner. During that time and afterwards he had to rely on ladies of the night, one to whomb he gave part of his own severed ear as a lovers gift during a mental illness episode. Vincent never gave up the idea of Marriage. His paintings are full of couples some of the male figures look like Vincent himself. He once wrote that he would like to have the chance to paint ('in flesh and blood') his own children.
