    Any film studies student will tell you everything in a film is significant. I watched this film last night and was wondering about the tree. I'm an artist currently interested in tree symbols and allegory. Trees are worshipped by many ancient cults as the abode of a god of as a god itself. Trees are used as symbols of knowledge, the universe and eternal life. As we don't see the Virgin Mary in the film I wondered whether she spoke to Emily through the tree (like Moses and the Burning Bush)? Christ is sometimes represented by a tree in medieval art. I guess the film director didn't want to use some cheesy actress to represent the Virgin so he used the allegory of the tree. That's my theory. I expect only the director could tell you for sure.
